Jobs Up in Management and Tech Consulting, Says ConsultingCrossing.com

July 22, 2013   |  PDF version  PDF version

Pasadena, CA - More than 21,000 new consulting jobs have been posted on ConsultingCrossing.com in the past 30 days. The figure clearly signifies that the employment demand is spiraling in the professional and business service sector. Hiring trends on the leading jobsite clearly reflect the most recent national job figures reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Based on the latest BLS figures, the professional and business service sector has added 53,000 new jobs in June, staying on pace with the industry's growth in the past year. Sub-sectors within the industry that have done well include management and technical consulting, which have added 8,000 new jobs; computer systems design and related services, which have added 7,000 jobs; and temporary help services, which have added 10,000 jobs.

Similar to the spike in healthcare jobs, Obamacare has been responsible for significant employment growth in the professional and business service sector as well. For example, increased hiring in computer systems design and technical consulting may be related to the provisions of the healthcare legislation that requires hospitals to shift to electronic records. Beginning in 2011, the government has helped fund the implementation of new electronic filing systems at hospitals and clinics that have long relied on paper records. The process can be time-consuming, tedious, and often calls for an expertise beyond the current staffing abilities of hospitals. More jobs are expected to be created as medical providers create procedures for analyzing the data in those records to improve patient care. Because many of the needed processes are technical and very complicated, this has resulted in an increased demand for technical consulting companies to advise in the implementation of these new systems.

The BLS data has been clearly reflected in the current hiring data on ConsultingCrossing.com that indicates the greatest demand by far for consulting manager jobs, followed by SAP consultants, and technical consulting positions. As businesses in general continue to grow more reliant on technology to run day-to-day operations, the professional and business service sector is expected to grow in tandem. Those with expertise in this area should be constantly monitoring the latest technology trends and staying up-to-date in their skills - or will risk having their knowledge become obsolete very quickly.

Particularly at risk are professionals who have been in the industry for a very long time. Because the sector is constantly evolving, employers are biased towards hiring younger workers with seemingly more current skills. Older or more seasoned employees must demonstrate that they can stay up-to-speed with the current trends, or risk being replaced.
